As of Spring of 2018, fashion-forward eyewear wasn’t just UV-protecting accessories. Instead, some super creative designers included them in their runway shows as essential statement-making elements to their collections. This means they could even overshadow other designer’s pieces. Who would imagine sunglasses could do that? And just like the frequent catwalk appearances of newly discovered supermodels, they were impossible to ignore. Frames were either enormous and thick or minimalist and with minuscule borders. Also, spectacles came coated in a vast range of colors.

The standard aviator and Wayfarer shapes were thrown out the window, and cat-eye and sports styles were ushered in and given new high-fashion interpretations (read more in our article about eyewear trends for this 2018). Some were super-thin and had this '90s fits vibe, while others possessed a more mature and demure sensibility to them. On the other hand, some were incredible out-of-the-box art major projects glued to the upper-half of the face.

With the hottest designers, such as Moschino, Stella McCartney, Dolce & Gabanna, and Gucci,  including statement eyewear to their collections, it is needless to say, come summer, our eyewear game should be beyond “on pint glasses.”

Statement sunglasses: ready-to-wear tips for eyewear

Sunglasses are usually associated with two things: one is attempting to escape the limelight, the paparazzi, and the crowds of fans. The other one is a quick solution for a hangover. Some celebrities tuck their shades under their headpieces to lose track of the paparazzi, while others don their darkest shades on even the cloudiest, rainiest days to cover up after a sleepless night.

But these trends are not an option for attention-loving, glamorous, bold fashionistas, and certainly not for our dear readers.

This summer promises to be full of eyewear that looks anything but incognito. The spring runways were dotted with uncanny specs, larger-than-life pieces that ranged from iridescent Blade-Runner rims to double cat-eye frames. The future is here, and it comes in the shape of eyewear. Here are a few tips that will help you get away with it!

1. It’s all about attitude: If it feels right, then it looks right. Before you step out of the house, take good, long look in the mirror. If you’re not 100% sure that’s the look for the day, go back and change. The world is your runway, so the first thing you need to check out of the list before you stomp that sidewalk is your attitude and confidence.
2. Think of contrasting colors: you’re going out dressed in purple? Wear big, round, all-gold sunglasses. You need some shades to go out with that pretty pink dress? Anything in the family of blue will work wonders for making a statement. The trick is to go the opposite way in the chromatic circle when choosing which pair of sunglasses go with a look.
3. Don’t be afraid of the sparkles!: the shinier and glitzier, the better. Who doesn’t love diamonds (or well-placed rhinestones)? Anything that has either a glittery, metallic or pearl-like shimmer to it will stylish your look to a new level.
4. Vintage is a comfort zone: yes, we all know classics never go out of fashion, but they can turn predictable. And predictable in the fashion world means extinct. So update yourself! Look for new brands, shapes, and frames! Who knows what you can find?
5. Less CAN be more: minimalism is not always the option to go with, but when it comes to statement pieces (being the Sunglasses one of the flashiest, most visible fashion statements) it is better if you don’t overdo it. Nothing can go wrong with a shape-hugging black dress with matching black shoes, a simple golden chain around your waist and the biggest, most decadent gold-framed glasses you can find. That’s how a statement is made. That’s how you make all eyes turn to you!
